The Scarbrough Journal: 2024 Recap Edition
Welcome to the newest edition of the Scarbrough Journal. 2025 is upon us and promises to be another exciting year. In this edition, we wanted to take a moment to look back at 2024. It was a largely unpredictable year in the industry, and a bit hard to believe just how much happened around the world and how it affected sectors of our industry.
In this issue, we look at how the crisis in the Red Sea and the Baltimore Bridge collapse impacted international shipping. We also take a deeper dive into U.S. CBP’s crackdowns on imported goods, especially their attempt to deter bad actors from exploiting the de minimis exceptions. We discuss another down year in the domestic transportation market and how two hurricanes further depressed a struggling market. Canada had a difficult year overall with an economy marred by strikes including rail workers, dockworkers, and customs agents, but the newest release of CARM brought positive changes to duty and tax payments for importers. We look at how e-commerce continues to shape warehousing operations. And we provide an update on Mexico and look at how Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is impacting their economy.
Finally, we look ahead to 2025 and discuss upcoming changes to the industry and how they may affect businesses moving forward.
Thanks for reading and enjoy the issue!
